Being a crew volunteer for SMASH! will be a fun and unique experience where you will get the chance to make lifelong friends and work together to ensure convention attendees have a great time. We’re looking for people who are willing to put their heart gold and soul silver into making SMASH! 2017, the best one yet! We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are enthusiastic and as excited as we are for SMASH! 2017

Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know I have been accepted into Crew for SMASH! 2017?

Once online registrations have closed, our Crew Coordinators will email you if you have been successful or not.

What is the minimum age to volunteer at SMASH!?

At the time of your application you must be 16 years or older to volunteer and will need parental consent to participate at SMASH!. The exception to this is for Maid Cafe, where you have to be 18 years or older at the time of your application to volunteer.

Is food and drink provided?

All volunteers are provided with lunch and water on Saturday and Sunday of the SMASH! convention. We will try our best to cater to any dietary requirements but please remember to tell us in your application!

Do we get breaks? I want my break at a specific time, is this possible?

YES! We all need breaks during the day and we will try our best to cater to time specific breaks, however with a large volume of volunteers to consider options may be restricted.

Do I have to volunteer both days and Can I volunteer with my friend?

You do not have to volunteer for both days but you are welcome to apply with your friend. We want you to enjoy the convention as much as you can, however please understand that there are many different tasks on the day and there is no guarantee that both you and your friend will be accepted together in the same section.

I live interstate. Can I still volunteer?

We accept volunteers based on their applications as long as you are currently living in Australia.

I can’t speak English too well. Can I still volunteer?

We welcome everyone! Your selection is based on how well you respond to the questions on the form, so again, please take your time filling it out.

Can I volunteer and cosplay at the same time?

Definitely! All volunteers have the option to cosplay so long as it does not interfere with your assigned role. You can find out more by referring to the SMASH! Volunteers Code of Conduct on this subject.

Do I get paid during the event?

SMASH! is a non-profit organisation run by fans for fans! No volunteers receive monetary compensation. We are all volunteers, even the President!

Can I get a guest signing done on the day?

Every volunteer is allocated breaks and you are more than welcome to attend any scheduled events/signings during that time but there is no expectation that volunteers or even staff will be able to obtain a guest signing by volunteering at SMASH!.

Are there any requirements to become a SMASH! Volunteer?

There are no requirements to becoming a volunteer, other than that you should be over 18 years of age or have parental consent to do so.

I've never had any work or volunteer experience. Can I still apply?

You can apply to being a SMASH! volunteer without any experience. We are looking for fun and responsible people to join our ranks.

Are there any benefits for becoming a SMASH! Volunteer?

As a SMASH! Volunteer, you will be entitled to free entry for both days, food and water as well as being presented with a SMASH! Volunteer Certificate upon completion of your volunteer duties. If you perform well enough, we often invite volunteers to do more for the organisation and encourage them to apply to be staff members so that they can contribute in more ways for next year’s convention!

So Training Day is compulsory - If I do not attend the compulsory training, what happens then?

We will provide you with all essential training. The training days are compulsory. If you cannot attend the training days and do not provide us with an adequate reason, we will unfortunately have to discontinue your status as a SMASH! volunteer.

Can I choose which department I wish to volunteer in?

You can select your preferences to the department you wish to volunteer for. However, keep in mind that with so many volunteers you may not be allocated to your first preference, in which case you’d be allocated to your second, or third. Your allocation is dependent on our volunteer requirements.

So what jobs am I expected to do on the day?

Volunteers will predominantly be assigned to one of the following departments during the convention -

A quick description of SMASH! Volunteer Departments:

Maid Cafe

Ever wanted to go behind the scenes of one of Japanese pop culture's greatest exports? As one of the most popular annual events at SMASH!, attendees flock to experience the unique service and delicious food from our famous Maid Cafe. Here is your chance be part of a wonderful team that makes the SMASH! 2017 Maid Cafe one of the best convention experiences in Australia. We are looking for someone with a warm and outgoing personality that can handle themselves under stress. You'll be serving food and drinks while in a Maid/Butler costume, and will ideally have a blast talking to co-Maids & Butlers as well as customers. If you are enthusiastic, with good communication and customer service skills, you'd make the ultimate Maid/Butler for our Maid Cafe!

Please be advised that all applicants for this section must be 18 years or older. If successful, you will be required to produce photo ID at the Maid Cafe interviews. If you have selected Maid Cafe as a preference on your Crew 2017 application you must also submit additional information. More information can be found on the application.


The art section consists of craft workshops, illustration workshops, and the art stage. Volunteers will be helping instruct others during various craft and illustration workshops throughout the day. You will also be informing attendees of other various craft activities in the room as well as screenings and artist demonstrations. Whether you like watching masterpieces being created, or simply enjoy helping make origami pieces, art is a place for everyone!

BJD (Ball Jointed Dolls)

BJD section will display a variety of exquisite Ball Jointed Dolls for attendees to observe. Volunteers will ensure that the displays are a success and that they are unharmed. You will also be assisting in any BJD workshops being conducted throughout the day. If you are passionate about BJDs or you would like to learn a thing or two about them, then this is the section for you!

Panels & Workshops

Want to learn how to make cosplay armour? How knowledge on various Japanese sub-cultures? We invite local guests (and celebrities!) to run our demonstration panels and workshops. Volunteers will make sure everything in the room is running smoothly, and assist the transitions from one panel to the next.


Are you an aspiring Gundam pilot? Maybe you take passion in creating your own Gundam models. Volunteers, in conjunction with our major sponsor Hobbyco, will be assisting attendees with everything Gundam!


Want to see new anime as it is released? With anime playing throughout the day, screenings is a relaxing yet responsible role. There will be many exclusive media playing and it’s your job to make sure the media is protected, that the screenings run on time and that the capacity of the room is filled!


Only for the brave hearted. Working in karaoke is a test of personal endurance and discipline as it requires individuals to possess the art of patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. Nevertheless, surely an exciting and unique experience where you will meet others who share the same passion for singing as you! Trading Card Games encompass a large part of the SMASH! experience for many of our attendees. Volunteer duties include supervising Pokémon duels, running TCG tournaments, instructing new players on the ways of the card, and sharing with others their passion for TCG!


From concerts to cosplay competitions and a whole lot more, stage is where all the big things happen! With us you will get to see what goes on behind the scenes, put your efforts into creating these highly anticipated events, and making sure everything runs smoothly. We are looking for organised individuals who can keep their head straight in a dynamic and stressful environment. Experience with stage and production would be a bonus!


Want a sure-fire way to see almost ALL of the cosplay at SMASH!? Join one of our most vibrant sections and help showcase these talented cosplayers by helping them through the registration process and the photobooth. Volunteers are expected to be patient, organised, and able to follow instructions.


This involves many duties such as: assisting in escorting guests from dressing rooms to stage area, ushering & crowd control and ticket distribution. Volunteers are expected to be able to work well individually as well as in groups and also to try and make the guests experience in Sydney as pleasant as possible. Unfortunately, volunteers may not have direct contact with the guests, but simply being in their presence is overwhelming!


Whether you’re a console gamer or PC gamer, we’re looking for people who have a passion for games and are patient, outgoing and fun. Knowledge of games would be a plus and main responsibilities will include supervision of the gaming equipment.


We are looking for happy and energetic volunteers who can display the best of customer service when greeting our wonderful SMASH! attendees as they walk through that door. Duties will include supervision of lines, ushering and cash handling as well as answering any extra questions attendees may have while waiting in line.

Exhibitors and Sponsors (E&S)

Much like our Ticketing team, volunteers in E&S will be helping SMASH! attendees in the vendor hall and artists alley as they walk through the door and venture through the stalls set up by our various sponsors, artists and exhibitors. Duties include supervision of lines, doing patrols, helping E&S staffers help with vendor or artists enquiries and anything else that attendees might have trouble finding in the general area!

Merchandising and Statistics

In this section, volunteers will be helping at our SMASH! Stall to sell SMASH! merchandise. Other volunteers will be walking around to keep track of the number of attendees we have, conduct surveys and anything that Statistics department can come up with in order to best gauge what our attendees love about SMASH! and the feedback that will help improve SMASH! as well.
